Why on earth would you consider contracting in London? Did you not know contracting isn’t a real job? Surely you can see you need to grow up and stop kidding yourself that you want to run a business that could be the next Nike, Microsoft or Facebook or on the way to being on Dragons Den. Let me explain why you should take a permanent job as it is definitively the right way to go!
Firstly when you have a permanent job you don’t get to select your work there is someone to tell you what to do! You don’t have to think or input into how you spend the majority of your life while actually awake!
Secondly if you’re really special your boss will give you the same thing to do every day so its really easy and you don’t have to face up to any types of challenge in your life.
It’s really a no brainer
When you’re in a permanent job opposed to a contract job, you have a real job with a job title that your Mum or Dad might understand. You might even get a uniform and loads of rules on how you should dress. This is great because again you don’t have to think and as an IT Contractor you might have to waste 5 minutes looking in your wardrobe everyday deciding what to wear.
You often find IT Contractors and Interim managers working in London wandering around town in the middle of the morning deciding which coffee shop is politically correct and ethical to buy coffee from. This can be an emotional challenge that you can avoid when you have to turn up at the same office everyday at 9.00am. Also you could risk friendships when you talk to friends who miss understand how stressful not commuting to work every day can be. Jealously is a terrible thing but it is traumatic when your friends think you have a better work life balance than them. They won’t understand that what you really crave is regimentation.
When you work in an office you have the support of one or several managers that can help ensure that you work hard all day and don’t waste any time in your life by taking too long for lunch or by ideally chatting or checking your social media profile and status. There is no worry about motivating yourself in a permanent job because your boss is there to motivate you, together with all the management speak and the team posters on the wall telling you to think outside the box.
I hope you can see working in a permanent role is clearly better, you can easily ignore that you may earn half the net wage of an IT contractor by reassuring yourself with the fact that you will never have to face variety in your life. Additionally you can also comfort yourself with the fact that when you are sick for up to 4.5 days per year that you will get statutory sick pay and that once you have endured 2 years you could be eligible to a redundancy payment if the company ever decided to downsize.
Clearly being an IT contractor, interim consultant or freelancer could give you far too much variety and increase the stress levels in your life. Having a permanent, mundane job is probably far better for your health and something you should aspire too! So wake up don’t listen to anyone telling you how to double your income and enjoy a more flexible life style, it’s just a dream … isn’t it?
